Le Bernardin

Cuisine: French, Seafood

Location: New York

ABOUT LE BERNARDIN

Le Bernardin, New York's internationally acclaimed four star seafood restaurant. The restaurant was started in 1972 in Paris by Gilbert and Maguy le Coze and moved to New York in 1986. Dedicated entirely to the cuisine of Gilbert Le Coze, the self-taught chef, it only served fish: fresh, simple and prepared with respect.
In no time, Le Bernardin became renown for setting standards in the cooking of seafood in America. It received its first four star review from the New York Times only three months after opening—that's how much Gilbert's unconventional cooking had taken New Yorkers—and is the only New York four star restaurant that has maintained its status of excellence for more than 20 years. Subsequent reviews have come in 1989, 1995, and 2005 with the same verdict: Four stars.

After the unexpected death of her brother Gilbert in 1994, Maguy Le Coze has presided over Le Bernardin with co-owner, Chef Eric Ripert. Ripert has worked in some of the world's greatest kitchens, and under his watch, the restaurant continues to receive critical acclaim for its food and service, including top rankings in the Zagat guide and since 2005, the much coveted award of three Michelin stars. The restaurant has received numerous James Beard Awards, since 1998, including those for Outstanding Service, Outstanding Chef, and Outstanding Pastry Chef.

Le Bernardin : Restaurant Review

Ambiance
The restaurant is beautiful but not opulent in an imposing sort of way, the decor is actually quite modern and the combination of the teak-wood and the soothing blue tones of the carpeting and walls is very pleasing to the eye.

Food Quality
-The service is outstanding and all of the dishes are light and flavorful.
-The food was fresh and great
-Every dish is unique and sublime

Service
-The staff from the hostess, wait staff, sommelier and maitre d' were friendly and engaging.
-The service is wonderful and the dishes are prepared each with its own identity
-The service was great, not stuffy
-The assistant sommelier was quite knowledgeable about wine.

Wait time
-the service are slow

e.g  customer complain

When we sat, it took 10 minutes before anyone gave us a menu – and we had to flag someone down to get it. Then, the sommelier took another 15 minutes to show up to our table and was very difficult to get a hold of all night (there were 3-4 sommeliers there too).

It is a very expensive restaurant and that is the only reason why I won't be able to frequent it.

The only complaint I had was that the service was pretty slow.

CONCLUSION

Le Bernardin restaurant is French fusion and really dedicated to the excellent preparation of fish dishes. The service is excellent and extremely professional, it is clear that the staff works hard to make everyone feel special and comfortable at the restaurant. The restaurant cuisine was influences from Japan, Korea, Italy, Spain and the US, Ripert combines this with a mind boggling selection of seafood from around the world.
